Lake Diversion Project

Lake Tyee Recreational Park

Update – 07-2-08

Congratualations to Mike Prentice, Dave and the Lake Tyee Maintenance Crew on the progress that has been made on the Grandy Creek Diverions Project.  As many of you have seen, fresh water is now entering the lake from Grandy Creek and the fish love it.

We continue to work with the Department of Fish and Wildlife on the removal of the dam on Grandy Creek.  The latest from the Department of Fish and Wildlife is they would like to install 3 log jams downstream of the dam, and only half of the dam would be removed.  The sediment behind the dam would be allowed to move downstream burying the logs and root wads, making the structure passable and provide a pretty solid habitat at the same time.

It would take two root wads with about 8 feet of tree still attached, plus four other root wads per jam.  Those would then be jammed into place in the stream channel in the shape of a crescent with the tips of the crescent pointing downstream.  The two wads with stem attached would have the root wad upstream, and the steam jammed into the bank to prevent movement.

This work will probably occur late summer of early fall as time allows for the Maintenance Crews.

Update – 06-10-08

Dave and his crew have backfilled the old diversion and have installed the new headwall.  They are waiting for a couple of good weather days to do some work on the entrance to the headwall and then we are ready to start introducing water into the lake.  The team is approximately 95% complete and will have water flowing into the lake soon.  There is still work to be done on the head gate and fish screen and they are moving to put something in temporarily until the permanent part are ready to be installed.

Update – 05-08-08

The Lake Diversion Project continues to make progress.  Over the last couple of months, the metering device at the Grandy Creek Diversion has been installed, the precast spillway and headwall for the diversion has been ordered and are ready to be delivered.  Over the next few weeks the spillway and headwall will be installed along with the slide gate for Grandy Creek.  Once installed and water starts being introduced into the lake from Grandy Creek, the plan is to inspect the pipe from the creek to the lake to insure the integrity of the pipe.

The lake level continues to be fine for now, but we hope the added water from Grandy Creek in the summer months will help the water level and water quality of the lake.

Update – 01-29-08

In early September the existing Grandy Creek diversion inlet and outlet point were located and uncovered.

On November 22nd, a meeting was held at Lake Tyee with the Fisheries Department, the Department of Ecology and the lake maintenance foreman, a board member and a Lake Committee member.  The meeting went well and both the Departments are willing to work with Lake Tyee to get water from Grandy Creek under our existing water rights.

The Fisheries Department have told lake Tyee that we would have to remove the existing Dam on Grandy Creek because the creek is considered a fish bearing, spawning creek.  We have applied for and received a Hydraulic Project Permit to do the work.  The permit stipulates that the work can only be done starting June 15th and must be completed by September 30, 2008.  The Fisheries enhancement group has been contacted to assist in the removal of the dam and grade control for the creek.  There has been no answer yet if they are willing to help and at what cost.

The Depart of Ecology has reviewed our existing surface water permits and with compliance of the permit provisions, we can get water fro Grandy Creek.  They have generously offered a measuring device that will not cost us much.  We are planning to build a new diversion when the Dam removal work is taking place and have been given permission to use the new measuring devise until the permanent diversion is in place.

We have applied for an Application for Change or Transfer of a Water Right so that we can use the unused excess water from our Certificate of Ground Water Right.  If approved, this would allow us to pump well water into the lake during the summer months, possibly in the form of a fountain or other form to introduce more oxygen into the lake.
